Summary

Enggang & Pipit is a friendship and peacebuilding event that aims to bridge the divide between communities through the sharing of stories.

Detailed description

Let's Do Something About Stereotypes!

Have you felt misunderstood by others? Have you struggled with the impact of the stereotypes placed on you or your community? Are you looking for an opportunity to correct the narrative about your identity?

Enggang & Pipit is a friendship and peacebuilding event that aims to bridge the perception gaps between communities by fostering understanding through the sharing of stories. Through this, we aim to begin the process of debunking the stereotypes and generalisations that affect nation-building.

In conjunction with Malaysia Day, we want to focus on the challenges of the Stateless Community in Malaysia. Come, listen, and maybe you can be an agent of change who can make that difference to the communities who have been marginalised.

Our Objectives:

  • Bring Communities Together
  • Foster Understanding Through Story-Sharing
  • Debunk Stereotypes and Generalisations

Programme:

In this two-and-a-half-hour event, participants will break the ice between new friends in a fun and exciting way. Participants will then find a partner from a different community for the Story Walk Activity where they will have a chance to listen to each other's stories and share theirs within a safe space.

All participants will have the opportunity to talk about the Stereotypes and Generalisations that impact their communities through the Breaking the Stereotypes Activity and group discussion.

No event is complete without food! As an extension of the friendship-building, participants will have a place to share and enjoy a meal together.

FUN BIT!

In conjunction with Malaysia Day, we’d like to ask you to bring along something* that symbolises what Malaysia positively means to you!

NOTE: Limited spaces are available, so sign up now!

About Akar Umbi Society

Through people-development programmes and initiatives, Akar Umbi works closely with the grassroots to develop stronger communities.

Grassroots communities are by definition a group of people who work together through organised local networks or community organisations to create a voice or action for issues and common interests that matter to them the most.

Communities are essentially people who share things in common. Whether it is a geographical location, work, identity, affinity or affiliation, commonalities define community. Some communities struggle. For communities such as the refugees, the stateless, indigenous people and the urban poor, the lack of opportunities and access to critical resources marginalise them.

Akar Umbi Development Society (ROS: PPM-001-10-18072021) is a non-governmental organisation that collaborates with the grassroots communities towards ending marginalisation and creating equal opportunities. Through people-development programmes and initiatives, Akar Umbi works closely with the grassroots to develop stronger communities.

We recognise that the experts on matters related to the grassroots community are the communities themselves. We aspire to journey alongside individuals and communities to bring about positive change, find empowerment, create equal opportunities so that people can live in a meaningful and sustainable way.
